Here are the diaries, with occasional gaps, of John Houston Bills (1800-1871), a businessman and planter who lived near Bolivar. Bills recorded family news, farm records, life during the Civil War and Reconstruction, relations with slaves and freedmen, and trips to northern and southern cities.

These are military reminiscences of Major Brown (1840-1893), Confederate States of America, of Maury County. Writing in 1867-69, Brown describes daily life and local opinion in Nashville immediately before and after the firing on Fort Sumter in April, 1861. The Battle of Gettysburg is also described in detail.

The papers of Isaac Newton Buck, businessman, Methodist minister, and cofounder, with his son Jonathan Buck, of Andrew College in Putnam County includes account books for Buck's store near White Plains in Jackson County, which lists customers' names, items purchased, and prices paid. Also included are the 1847 state legislation, a deed dated 1849, and other papers relating to Andrew College.

This is correspondence between Cable (1844-1925), a noted author from New Orleans, Louisiana, and later Northampton, Massachusetts, and Charles Waddell Chesnutt (1858-1932), Negro poet of Cleveland, Ohio. Chesnutt's literary efforts and the Open Letter Club, an inter-racial organization headquartered in New York City and Vanderbilt University, Nashville, are discussed.

This is the diary of Isaac Conger (1789-1857), a Methodist circuit rider in Bedford, Moore, Coffee, Franklin, and Lincoln counties. Conger, who lived in Lincoln County, describes his daily activities as a preacher.

The diary of Pvt. Fancher (d. 1912), Co. K, 16th Tennessee Infantry, Confederate States of America. Fancher, a native of White County, describes his capture by Federal troops; his imprisonments near Pikeville, Tennessee, and Rock Island, Illinois; his enlistment in the U.S. Army; and his subsequent duties at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.

This is an account book for John Jay Freeland's general merchandise store in Hillsborough, North Carolina, owned in partnership with his son Dr. Charles Joseph Freeland. The account books list customers' names, items purchased, and amounts paid. Also included are notes made by Dr. Freeland regarding his medical practice in Moultrie County, Illinois.

This letterbook of official correspondence consists of forty-six letters written by Harris (1818-1897), Governor of Tennessee, 1857-62, and is addressed to individuals of prominence in the Confederate government and army, such as Judah P. Benjamin, Jefferson Davis, Albert S. Johnston, Christopher G. Memminger, Gideon J. Pillow, and Leonidas Polk.

The J.C. Harwood diary is that of an enlisted man in Co. A, 1st Indiana Battalion, U.S. Army. Harwood, who was stationed in Pulaski County, describes his routine as a soldier; the hanging of Sam Davis in November, 1863; foraging expeditions; and the confiscation of cotton.

This is the diary, with supplements, of Capt. Henderson (1882-1966), Battery F, 114th Field Artillery, U.S. Army. Henderson, of Williamson County, records his activities in Europe during World War I; information on his unit; and lists of Williamson County soldiers who served in World War I and the Spanish-American and Civil Wars. Also included is correspondence regarding the plot to capture Kaiser Wilhelm II in 1918-19, in which Henderson was involved. See additional Thomas F. P. Henderson papers on Mf. 1090 and Mf. 1357.

The papers of Cave Johnson (1793-1866), lawyer, congressman, postmaster general, and resident of Clarksville, consists primarily of letters written by Johnson to James Buchanan regarding political affairs in Tennessee.

This is a memoir of Samuel Milligan (1814-1874), Judge, U.S. Court of Claims; resident of Greeneville; and associate of Andrew Johnson. Milligan, who was a Unionist during the Civil War, writes of his activities reporting on Confederate troop strengths to the Union forces and his eventual move behind Union lines for protection. Milligan also observes and reports on activities at the 1860 Democratic National Convention which he attended. Also included are genealogical data and biographical sketches relating to the Milligan family.

The papers of Alfred Osborne Pope Nicholson (1808-1876), a politician and U.S. Senator from Columbia and Nashville, consists primarily of political correspondence with men such as President Franklin Pierce and Tennessee Governors Isham Green Harris and Andrew Johnson. Also included are letters from John Bell, James Buchanan, John C. Calhoun, Jefferson Davis, James K. Polk, and other prominent individuals of the period.

James Hervey Otey (1800-1863) was the first Episcopal Bishop of the Diocese of Tennessee and one of the founders of the University of the South at Sewanee. In this diary Otey describes his church work, daily activities, and travels, including a trip to New Orleans.

These are two doctoral dissertations dealing with contemporary issues in Tennessee. The first one, completed in 1973 at Indiana University, deals with the policies of the TVA regarding the purchase and use of strip mined coal. The second one, completed in 1973 at Purdue University, considers the effects of city-county consolidation through the study of four U.S. cities, one of which was Nashville.

The Draper papers, compiled by Lyman Draper (1815-1891), cover a broad geographical area of the United States from the East Coast to the Mississippi River, classified primarily under names of important figures. Much information on the early history of Tennessee can be found in these papers. The Draper Papers, in fact, constitute one of the essential primary sources for the frontier phase of the state’s history. Such topics as the Battle of King’s Mountain, Nancy Ward, Attakullakulla, Dragging Canoe, Cherokee treaties, the early Cumberland settlements, Nashborough, James Robertson, the Nickajack expedition, and many others are dealt with in the far-ranging interviews and notes that Draper collected during the early 19th century.

These are public and private papers of James K. Polk (1795-1849), eleventh President of the United States, 1845-49. Polk came from a prominent family of Maury County planters and many of his letters were to home state constituents and political associates. The collection includes correspondence, diaries, drafts of congressional messages, account and memoranda books, and Polk's notes on various issues of the period. Correspondents include Andrew Jackson, A. O. P. Nicholson, Gideon J. Pillow, and other prominent men of the period. Originals are located in the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. Published index. These are selected records from the Tennessee Field Office of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands. The Freedman’s Bureau was set up by Radical Republicans to minister to the educational and economic needs of freed slaves in the wake of the Civil War. These records constitute the first official documentation of many newly freed slaves and are, therefore, a very significant source for African-American genealogy, as well as a critical source for the history of Reconstruction in Tennessee.

These records contain correspondence, reports, orders, complaints, leases for abandoned lands, and labor contracts. The bulk of the collection consists of letters to and from the Bureau’s field agents in various county seat towns in Middle and West Tennessee, concerning problems and issues confronting freedmen in their area. The Creek Trading company was set up by the federal government to sell goods in the southern frontier (Georgia and Alabama) at reasonably good rates to foster good will and friendship and to discourage trade between the Indians and the French and Spanish.

This collection contains records of the agency, including its correspondence with officials, private individuals, and chiefs and other members of the Cherokee tribe. Subjects include economic and social conditions, trade and travel, work of missionaries, friction between whites and Cherokee and within the tribe, the treaty of July 8, 1917, and the Cherokee migration westward. It also includes the records of the Cherokee agents as the financial and procurement agent for the War Department in Tennessee and the records of Joseph McMinn, special agent for the removal of the Cherokees.

The collection includes the papers, 1799-1815, of Hugh McGavock (1761-1844), of Wyeth County, Virginia; the pre-Civil War papers of Jacob McGavock Dickinson's father, Judge Henry Dickinson (1806-1872) of Columbus, Mississippi; and the pre-Civil War political correspondence of Randal W. Foster (1818-1871), a Nashville lawyer.

This diary was kept by Samuel Hervey Laughlin (1796-1850), a lawyer, Nashville newspaper editor, and State Senator representing Warren, Franklin, Coffee, Cannon, DeKalb, and Van Buren counties and the territory which later became Grundy County. Laughlin records his daily activities and observations on current local issues. Also included are a eulogistic sketch of Felix Grundy (1777-1840) and some genealogical data regarding the Duncan, Sharpe, and Laughlin families. This is the diary of Cpl. Caruthers, Polk's Light Artillery, Confederate States of America, who was wounded in the Battle of Shiloh in April, 1862. Caruthers records briefly the Battle of Shiloh and his daily activities as a teacher in Hardeman County following his military discharge in 1862.

These are letters of John Rhea (1753-1832), a Congressman from Sullivan County, 1803-15. The letters were written to Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, and Andrew Jackson and deal mainly with political events of the period.

This diary, written in French, is that of Pvt. Close (Pierre Clausse), 13th Pennsylvania Reserves, U.S. Army. Close describes his army activities in New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia. He was wounded in the second Bull Run Campaign in 1862.

This collection consists primarily of news stories about the Southern Tenant Farmers Union and its successor organizations, the National Farm Labor Union, the National Agricultural Workers Union, and the Agriculture and Allied Workers Union. Also included are the memoirs of H. L. Mitchell (b. 1906), one of the early union leaders who had his headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee. The Southern Tenant Farmer’s Union was one of the most significant Depression-era organizations of sharecroppers and agricultural laborers.

In the personal correspondence of Major Vardell, Confederate States of America, to his wife Jane Dickinson Vardell of Charleston and Greenville, South Carolina, Vardell expresses primary concern for the happiness of his wife and family and writes only briefly of his military duties.

This scrapbook was compiled by Susie Gentry (1860-1844), a Franklin genealogist and civic leader. The volume contains sketches of historical events, prominent men and women, and historic houses; lists of Revolutionary War veterans and cemeteries; accounts of activities of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the United Daughters of the Confederacy; and assorted clippings on a wide range of subjects.

This journal was kept by Pvt. Tipton (1822-1894), of Blount County, 1st Tennessee Mounted Volunteers, U.S. Army, while serving in the Mexican War. Tipton records events enroute from Camp Carroll, near Memphis, Tennessee, to the Rio Grande; also described are the Battles of Vera Cruz and Cerro Gordo.

O'Bryan, who was encamped in Tennessee and Georgia, records his daily activities and makes some discerning observations about Gens. Braxton Bragg, John Bell Hood, and Joseph E. Johnston. The preparatory school was originally founded as the Campus School near Vanderbilt University, Nashville. In 1897 it moved to Spring Hill in Maury County, where it operated until its closing in 1932. These are letters of Brig. Gen. Rains, (1833-1862), Confederate States of America, commander of a garrison at Cumberland Gap, to his wife in Nashville. Rains describes his daily activities and implores his wife to join him at Cumberland Gap. Also included is a copy of a speech, 1860, made by Rains in opposition to secession. Unpublished register.

The diaries were written by Reuben Ross (1830-1864), a young cadet from Middle Tennessee, while he was attending the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York. Also included is an undated journal of a trip to New Orleans, Louisiana; correspondence; and some later military orders of Capt. Ross, Maury Artillery, Confederate States of America.

This collection consists of four separate accessions: (1) The correspondence, legal documents, and other papers of William Polk (1758-1834) of North Carolina, surveyor-general of that part of North Carolina which later became Tennessee. Collection includes letters from Andrew Jackson Donelson, John H. Eaton, Ephraim H. Foster, Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, Leonidas Polk, and other prominent individuals of the period. (2) A journal, 1760-61, of Christopher Fischer, describing his trip from Charleston, South Carolina, to the "Heywassie Country." (3) The autobiography, travels, and poetry (unpublished), ca. 1820, of John Bell (fl. 1800-1850), a physician from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Included is a description of early Nashville. (4) The correspondence, 1816-83, primarily of John Coffee (1772-1833) of Nashville, including twenty letters from Andrew Jackson; other correspondents include William Polk and A. J. Hutchins.

This is a diary kept by Mrs. Williams (b. 1846), a native of Montgomery County, who moved to Todd County, Kentucky, following her marriage in 1870. Mrs. Williams records her daily activities, her attempts to write a novel, and local news of Todd and Montgomery counties. There are no entries for 1872-74. See also Mf. 1261.

The records of First Baptist Church consist of an unpublished history of the church written by Rev. Robert Boyte Crawford Howell (1801-1868). Included are chapters on the church's early organization, pastorships, missionary work, the Baptist State Convention, factions within the church, and the church during the Civil War.

This collection consists primarily of correspondence, accounts, legal documents, and memorabilia of the Hayes family of Davidson and Williamson counties. Correspondents include Oliver Bliss Hayes (1825-1868) of Williamson County, the son of Oliver Bliss Hayes (1783-1858), a prominent Nashville lawyer and later an ordained Presbyterian minister. The collection contains fourteen Civil War letters. One of these letters, dated 1863, mentions the death of Randal McGavock (1826-1863), an officer in the Confederate army; the letter also describes conditions in the North during the Civil War.

The letterbooks, 1795-99, 1800-04, were kept by John Overton (1766-1833) of Nashville, while he was a collector of internal revenue in the District of Tennessee for the United States government. Kendrick describes camp conditions; the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, 1862; the difficult winter of 1863; the attempted invasion of Ohio and Indiana; and reunion activities following the Civil War.

This is a diary kept by Samuel Hervey Laughlin (1796-1850), a lawyer, Nashville newspaper editor and State Senator, representing Warren, Franklin, Coffee, Cannon, DeKalb, and Van Buren counties and the territory which later became Grundy County. Laughlin records his trip to Baltimore, Maryland, for the 1840 Democratic National Convention; a visit to Washington, D.C.; and memoranda made during the 1843-44 session of the Tennessee General Assembly. Some of the prominent men mentioned are Henry Clay, Andrew Jackson, James K. Polk, and William Henry Harrison. See also Mf. 40 and Mf. 745 for additional collections of Laughlin papers.

Civil War Direct Tax Assessment records for Tennessee are listed by county. Assessments were made under the Congressional act entitled "An Act for the Collection of Direct Taxes in the insurrectionary districts within the United States, and other purposes," approved June 7, 1862. The Federal government was attempting to make the occupied South bear part of the cost of the war with this assessment. This is an extremely detailed and valuable wartime tax list for most of Tennessee, arranged by county and civil district.

This is an expense book or daybook of an Indian agent, probably David Henley, who was stationed in Knoxville. The book contains lists of materials or services exchanged for cash, and various receipts.

Mf. 84  -- Samuel Rankin Latta Diary, 1848-1857. 4 vols. TSLA. 1 reel. 35 mm.
This collection consists of four journals and miscellaneous letters of Samuel Latta (1827-1911) from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Latta records his activities as a student at Washington College in Pennsylvania, his move to Dyersburg, Tennessee, his marriage to Mary Guthrie, and comments on the Whig, Democratic, and Know-Nothing parties. There are 32 letters in the collection from June of 1861 to April of 1862, all of which are personal correspondence between family members during the Civil War. Twenty letters are from Capt. Samuel R. Latta, in the 13th Tennessee Regiment Confederate States of America, to his wife, Mary (Guthrie) Latta while stationed at various camps in the Confederacy. There is a photocopy of a lengthy letter from Capt. Latta to his wife on April 10, 1862, which is a detailed account of his involvement in the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee (the original copy is in the manuscript section at the University of Tennessee). Three letters are from John G. Latta to his brother, Samuel, who was living in Boston, Massachusetts, during the outbreak of the Civil War. The letters relate his moving his family to Dyer County, Tennessee, despite the risk it entailed. H e worked as an engineer and teacher in Dyer County.

This is the diary of Jesse Cox (1793-1879), of Sullivan and Williamson counties, an itinerant Primitive Baptist minister and veteran of the War of 1812. He believed strongly in slavery and Southern Rights and that the North represented the Beast spoken of in Revelations, and the South, the Lamb. Cox describes his religious conversion; activities as a preacher in Middle Tennessee; a disturbance in 1853 at the Wilson Creek Primitive Baptist Church, located in Williamson County; and his life as an older man during the Civil War.

This is the diary and letters of Maj. Cowan (1822-1863), Co. B, 45th Illinois Volunteers, U.S. Army. Cowan records his observations of the Civil War and describes the battles fought at Fort Donelson, Fort Henry, and Shiloh. He was killed at Vicksburg in May, 1863.

The journal of S.S. Gause, 1st Arkansas Regiment, Engineer Corps, Confederate States of America, includes descriptions and drawings of military fortifications and batteries in Virginia. Also included is a copy of what was reputed to be the memoir of Isaac, the body servant of Thomas Jefferson.

The four diaries, which together, describe some events in the lives of the John Orr (fl. 1830-1865) family: their emigration from Ireland to Maury County; their move to Canada at the outbreak of the Civil War; life in Canada; the sons' service in the Confederate army; and the family's return to Maury County in 1865.

This is a selection from the U.S. War Department records dealing with the Creek War, 1813-14. Collection includes correspondence and orders of several early leaders including Willie Blount, John Coffee, Edmund P. Gaines, Andrew Jackson, Return J. Meigs, and James Robertson. Originals located in the National Archives, Washington, D.C.

Mf. 93  -- James V. Ewing Family Papers, 1803-1948. TSLA. 1 reel. 35mm.
The papers focus mainly on James V. Ewing during the period of 1834-1884. Several documents relate to family in Virginia where his grandfather was from, but the collection mainly traces the Ewing family in Tennessee. There are also documents on the Swanson and Ezell families. The materials are comprised of correspondence, wills, receipts, promissory notes, estate papers, Civil War documents, and newspaper clippings. The wills and personal correspondence shows family relationships and traces the ownership of the Ewing homestead near Lewisburg, Tennessee.

James V. Ewing owned several farms and was a slave owner. His account book shows that cotton was one of the crops. His correspondence from the Civil War period contains letters from a nephew and his son, J.C.C. Ewing who served as an assistant surgeon in the 17th Tennessee, Confederate army. The diary of Mrs. James V. Ewing is also included.

This collection contains the Commissary documents of Lt. Col. Fowler, appointed a Commissary of Subsistence by President Abraham Lincoln during the Civil War. Fowler served at the Battle of Chancellorsville (Va.) and the Battle of Gettysburg. Among Commissary headquarters were Bridgeport, Alabama, and, Lookout Mountain and Chattanooga, Tennessee. His Commissary Corps followed General Sherman’s march-to-the-sea through Georgia. Also included is Fowler’s pocket diary on his journeys as well as his Farm Journal from Newburg, New York dated 1856 to May 22, 1863.

The originals are owned by the Historic Netherland Inn House Museum in Kingsport, Tennessee.

This account book includes slave records, farm accounts, and lumber business accounts for “Poplar Hill” farm in Montgomery County, Tennessee that Mabry and his son, Thomas Lawson Mabry owned and operated. Thomas Lawson Mabry’s account book has also been microfilmed by TSLA and can be found at Mf. 1075. It directly relates to John Elliott’s in that it links sharecroppers in Thomas Lawson’s book to slaves in John Elliott’s.

Correspondents include Hugh (1761-1844), David (1762-1838), and Randal (1761-1844) McGavock, sons of James McGavock (1728-1812); James (1786-1833), Jacob (1790-1878), and Joseph (1787-1853) McGavock, sons of Hugh McGavock; Samuel Hyde Saunders (fl. 1830), and Elizabeth Ewing (1801-1876). Subjects covered include David and Randal McGavock's search for good Tennessee land for purchase during the early 1800s; also, James and Joseph McGavock's experiences while serving in the military during the War of 1812. This is a diary kept by Hugh Brown Heiskell (1825-1849) while traveling by wagon train to Sacramento, California, during the 1849 gold rush. Heiskell records the scenic beauty as well as the daily rigors of a trip to the West. The 1863-65 diary of Susan Heiskell McCampbell (1834-1917), of Dandridge, the wife of Confederate States of America officer William McCampbell, describes the hardships suffered by women and children in Dandridge during the Civil War. Also included are a letter from McCampbell to his wife; the will of Frederick Steidinger (d. 1791) of Washington County, Maryland; and genealogical data on the Heiskell and related families.
