AN ACT To amend Tennessee Code Annotated, Title 6, Chapter 3, relative to the terms of the board of mayor and aldermen under the mayor-aldermanic charter in any municipality that is located within two (2) counties and has a population of not less than one thousand four hundred fifty (1,450) nor more than one thousand four hundred seventy-five (1,475) according to the 1990 federal census or any subsequent federal census.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:

SECTION 1. Tennessee Code Annotated, Section 6-3-102, is amended by adding the following language as a new, appropriately designated subsection:

( ) Notwithstanding any provision of this chapter to the contrary, any municipality incorporated under this charter that is located within two (2) counties and has a population of not less than one thousand four hundred fifty (1,450) nor more than one thousand four hundred seventy-five (1,475) according to the 1990 federal census or any subsequent federal census may by ordinance provide for the election of its mayor to a two-year term and the election of its aldermen to staggered four-year terms beginning with municipal elections that are conducted after January 1, 1999.

SECTION 2. Nothing in this act shall be construed as having the effect of removing any incumbent from office or abridging the term of any official prior to the end of the term for which such official was elected.

SECTION 3. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
