AN ACT To designate a certain segment of U.S. Highway 79 in Henry County as the "Camp Tyson Memorial Highway".

WHEREAS, From time to time, this General Assembly has seen fit to name certain public highways in recognition of those noteworthy places in Tennessee's storied military history; and

WHEREAS, Camp Tyson in Henry County is one such site, the only barrage balloon training center in the United States Army during World War II; and

WHEREAS, Named in honor of Brigadier General Lawrence D. Tyson, a Tennessee Senator and veteran of the Spanish-American War and World War I, Camp Tyson was constructed south of Paris in 1941 at a cost of $10 million; and

WHEREAS, Thousands of American servicemen were trained at Camp Tyson for Barrage Balloon Service of the Coast Artillery Corps under the expert command of Brigadier General John B. Maynard; and

WHEREAS, Barrage balloons had been utilized successfully during the Battle of Britain in the early years of World War II and soon thereafter attracted the Army's interest for defensive use against dive bombers; and

WHEREAS, Tennessee is proud of the part Henry County played in World War II and this legislative body deems it appropriate to establish a lasting tribute to Camp Tyson; now, therefore,

BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:

SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, the segment of U.S. Highway 79 in Henry County from Paris southwesterly to Henry is hereby designated as the "Camp Tyson Memorial Highway", an honor most befitting the prominent role Henry County played in the war to ensure world peace.

SECTION 2. The Department of Transportation is directed to erect suitable signs or to affix suitable markers designating such segment of U.S. Highway 79 in Henry County as the "Camp Tyson Memorial Highway".

SECTION 3. The erection of such signs shall be within the guidelines prescribed by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

SECTION 4. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
