AN ACT To designate a certain bridge on State Route 359 in Carter County as the "Samuel S. Cole Memorial Bridge".
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
WHEREAS, From time to time, the members of this General Assembly have seen fit to name certain highways and bridges to honor those exemplary citizens who contributed significantly to the overall growth and prosperity of their respective communities; and
WHEREAS, Samuel S. Cole was a man of high morals and exemplary character and was an instrumental force as an educator in Carter County; and
WHEREAS, A gentleman of great integrity, Professor Cole lived in the Okalona Community and taught for forty-four years in the Carter County School System; and
WHEREAS, Samuel Cole taught at the former Cave Springs School near the present bridge site, as its sole teacher and custodian; and
WHEREAS, Professor Cole was a man respected for both his intellect and his strong moral values; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Cole exemplified by his life and his work the finest example of a civic-minded attitude; and
WHEREAS, He was truly an inspirational leader among his peers, as he distinguished himself by means of his meritorious public service and unflagging commitment to others; now, therefore,
BE IT ENACTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF TENNESSEE:
SECTION 1. Notwithstanding any other provision of law to the contrary, the new bridge on State Route 359 at Okalona in Carter County is hereby designated as the "Samuel S. Cole Memorial Bridge" to honor the memory of this exemplary gentleman who most assuredly was a worthy representative of the true spirit of Tennessee.
SECTION 2. The Department of Transportation is directed to erect suitable signs or to affix suitable markers designating such bridge as the "Samuel S. Cole Memorial Bridge".
SECTION 3. The erection of such directional signs shall be within the guidelines prescribed by the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
SECTION 4. This act shall take effect upon becoming a law, the public welfare requiring it.
