Art Beyond Sight: Bringing Art and Culture to All

For twenty-five years Art Education for the Blind has sponsored Art Beyond Sight Awareness Month in October of each year. For the last four years, the Tennessee Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped, a section of the Tennessee State Library & Archives, has sponsored an exhibit of artwork created by students in Monica Leister’s art classes at the Tennessee School for the Blind (TSB). Included in the exhibit are ceramics, photography, collages, and paintings, created by students with low-vision and students who are legally blind. The students range from elementary school through high school.

Dot, the TSB tiger mascot, created for the first years’ exhibit from papier mache, made of braille paper, is a continuing part of the exhibit each year.
