The scrapbooks compiled by Mary Branch (1831-1879) of Maury County, Tennessee consist of newspaper clippings collected during the Civil War period and contain information on many subjects, including battles, prisoners of war, naval operations and privateering, Confederate generals, the Emancipation Proclamation, and prominent political figures such as Abraham Lincoln and Andrew Johnson.

The personal correspondence of John W. McRaven (1870-1931), of Yazoo City, Mississippi, to other members of his family in Dallas, Texas, relates his daily activities, interests, and local news. Also included is genealogical data on the McRaven family.

The memoirs of Martha Martin (1792-1886), an early Nashville settler, describes in detail the pioneer life in early Middle Tennessee and Louisiana, including her father's experience with the pirate Jean Lafitte (fl. 1809-1821). Also included are the memoirs of Mrs. Martin's grandson, E. McIver (1834-1915) of Murfreesboro. McIver describes his life as a farmer and his service as a Quartermaster Sergeant, 1st Tennessee Artillery Co., Confederate States of America, during the Civil War.

This is correspondence, legal documents, accounts, tax receipts, and miscellaneous materials relating to the Dieck family of Wayne County, Tennessee, and Union County, Illinois. Included are several Civil War letters written by members of the family serving in the U.S. Army which highlight the families’ Union sympathies. Some of the related families named are the Fusan, Goodner, Mars, Pollard, and Roberts families. Other items of interest include printed minutes of the Indian Creek Association of Baptists, 1856.

This collection is primarily genealogical data on the Josiah Turner Jordan (1842-1911) family of Williamson County, and related families. Also included are an autobiographical sketch of John L. Jordan (b. 1869), which describes Triune during and after the Civil War; and miscellaneous items relating to the Civil War and Reconstruction, including the Ku Klux Klan.

This collection is primarily personal correspondence of the George O'Bryan (1832-1912) family of Davidson and Williamson counties. Correspondents include Barsha Norfleet O'Bryan (1804-1855), Frances Blount O'Bryan (1827-1897), Susan Simpson Williams (1819-ca. 1879), and Lawrence O'Bryan (1829-1847). Also included is genealogical data on the O'Bryan, White, Hollins, and related families.

This is personal and military correspondence and records of Maj. Reid (1784-1816) of Bedford County, Virginia, and Williamson County, Tennessee. Reid served as aide-de-camp and military secretary to Gen. Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812. Also included are an 1839 letter from Andrew Jackson to Gen. Thomas Hinds; five personal letters written by Elizabeth Searcy during the Civil War and addressed to her cousin Frank Reid; and newspaper clippings related to Maj. John Reid.

The papers of Sidney P. duMont, collector, consists of correspondence, wills, indentures, personal memorabilia, and genealogical data of the dePeyster, Bunker, Stagg, and duMont families. Included are two letters, 1760, addressed to John Stagg, who later served as secretary to Gen. George Washington during the American Revolution; letters, 1864-65, of Robert Bunker of Mobile, Alabama, to his daughters in Liverpool, England; and an 1844 Mobile City Directory. This varied collection includes an 1860 map of Denmark; letterbook, 1864-65, of Capt. Thomas Clark, Confederate States of America, who was stationed at Quartermaster depots in Dalton, Georgia, and West Point, Mississippi; minutes, 1904-25, of the John Ingram Bivouac No. 5 and United Confederate Veterans Camp No. 37 at Jackson; membership rolls, 1903-27, of the Veterans Camp No. 37; constitution and bylaws of the New York Camp, the first Confederate Veterans organization located north of the Mason-Dixon line.

This is correspondence, deeds, indentures, receipts, surveys, and other items of the Winchester family, a prominent early nineteenth century Middle Tennessee family. Correspondence contains the names of W. J. Adair, Thomas Butler, John R. Eaton, Andrew Ewing, John Overton, James K. Polk, David Winchester, James Winchester, Marcus Winchester, John R. Wynne, and other prominent men of the period. Also included are two account books, 1811 and 1822, for a general merchandise store in Cairo; and a few items relating to Andrew Jackson and Andrew Jackson Donelson. Register available. Mf. 117  -- Lillard Family Papers, 1806-1913. 1000 items. TSLA. 2 reels. 35 mm.
This is the correspondence, accounts, deeds, land grants, and biographical and genealogical data of the Lillard family of Meigs County. Correspondents include Dr. John Mason Lillard (1827-1863) and his brother Newton Jackson Lillard (1832-1905), both of whom served in the Mexican and Civil Wars. There are forty letters written during the Civil War. Colonel J.M. Lillard commanded the 26th Tennessee Regiment and was killed at the Battle of Chickamauga; his brother fought with the Third Tennessee.

Also included are items relating to the history of Meigs County, 1825-1913, including church and school records, poll lists, militia records, and Confederate muster rolls. Register available.

This is the correspondence of Col. Teall (1818-1895), U.S. Army, to his wife in Syracuse, New York. Teall, who was with the Army of the Potomac near Fredericksburg, Virginia, describes the replacement of Gen. George B. McClellan by Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside in 1862; the Battle of Fredericksburg, 1862; a balloon reconnaissance mission; and the sadness brought about by the return of the body of a deceased Confederate officer to his comrades. These are the diaries of Z. C. Patten (1840-1925), a native of Jefferson County, New York. The bulk of the diaries deals with Patten's service in the 115th Illinois Regiment, U.S. Army, during which time he served in Kentucky and Tennessee, particularly around Nashville and Franklin. Patten, an artist, also describes his trip through Michigan and Illinois to teach painting. Register available.

The records of St. Ann ’s Church consist of baptism, confirmation, marriage, birth, and death records; and a historical sketch of the church for the period 1858-1904.

In the Civil War diary of Pvt. Fuller of Smith County, a member of Co. E, 2nd Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate States of America, he describes his service in Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi, and later imprisonment in Illinois and Pennsylvania.

This is a fee book which belonged to John Donelson (1718-1785), one of the founders of Nashville. Included are surveyors' fees; records of amounts paid to the shoemaker, schoolmaster, and doctor; a cancer cure and treatments for other diseases; records of amounts paid for food supplies; and a few pages copied from Donelson's journal which he kept while enroute to the early Nashville settlement, 1779-80.

This is a collection of correspondence, diaries, Bible record, will, biographical and genealogical data, and newspaper clippings of the Bills family of Boliver. The collection includes primarily papers of John Houston Bills (1800-1871) and his two daughters, Mary Caroline (1829-1869) and Evalina McNeal (1836-1926) Bills, and their respective husbands Robert Hancock Wood (1826-1901) and Marshall Tate Polk (1831-1884). Included are Civil War diaries which contain descriptions of life in Boliver during the war and a detailed description of the Battle of Shiloh, 1862, recorded by Capt. Marshall T. Polk, Confederate States of America. Register available.

The records of Zion Presbyterian Church, consists of minutes of session, 1808-1939; register of births, deaths, baptisms, marriages, and communicants, 1838-1939; financial records; and a historical sketch of this Maury County church. Zion was significant as a Scot-Irish congregation to which many of the earliest settlers of Maury County belonged.

This collection of diaries were kept by John Nick Barker (1796-1873), a plantation owner near Clarksville, Montgomery County. Most entries are very brief and give succinct information about weather and farm activities such as hog killing and planting. Some Civil War news is included, e.g., mention of the Battle of Fort Donelson and gunboats arriving at Clarksville.

This small collection of papers includes an 1841 abstract of land title for a plantation, which was the property of S. W. and Nannie P. Martin and George W. Jordan. Also included are a survey for the property, 1858; a diary, 1864-65, of Maj. John Minor of Montgomery County, Co. E, 10th Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate States of America, which contains his notes on troop movements, camp conditions, and deaths among the company; and thirteen Civil War letters written by Minor and other members of his family.

The records of the Indian Mound Methodist Church, consists primarily of a list of pastors appointed, 1381-1905 membership list, 1842-1946; partial listing of baptisms, marriages, and deaths, 1882-1927; and a revised membership list, 1945-62. Records of the Hopewell Methodist Church include a list of pastors appointed 1894-1935; membership list, 1861-1961; and a partial list of baptisms and marriages 1896-1912.

Mf. 129  -- John Francis McCloud and Charles S. Mitchell Scrapbooks, 1908-1952. 3 vols. TSLA. 1 reel. 35 mm. Microfilm Only Collection.
Scrapbook Volumes 1 and 2 deal with the life and career of Rev. McCloud (1873-1946), an Episcopal clergyman who served as assistant and later associate rector of Christ Episcopal Church in Nashville. Volume 3 deals with the life and career of Charles S. Mitchell (1873-1952), nicknamed "Mr. Candy Man," the owner of a Nashville candy business and a prominent civic leader. Register available.

This volume contains minutes, bylaws, and proceedings of the debating club; also included are miscellaneous birth, death, and marriage notations; records of the Knob Spring and Plunkett Creek churches; family accounts; and home remedies.

The records of Cool Springs Church consists of minutes of church meetings, 1829-1934; membership lists, 1835-1934; and constitution, articles of faith, and rules of decorum for this Williamson County church.

The Maxwell House Papers consist of items which were placed in the hotel cornerstone in 1860, and were found following destruction of the building by fire on December 25, 1961. Primarily newspapers and magazines of the period; also included are a list of subscribers for the original hotel loan and the specifications, 1859, of plans for the new hotel.

This arithmetic book was written by Jennings of Carroll County, Virginia. The book consists of problems dealing with multiplication, division, interest rates, insurance, commission, brokerage, foreign exchange, and other mathematical processes.

This collection of papers of Henry Shelton Sanford (1823-1891), lawyer, diplomat, businessman, world traveler, and native of Connecticut includes correspondence, diaries, biographical and genealogical data, legal documents and briefs, speeches, articles, accounts, and business memoranda. These items deal with art and artists; Sanford family business interests; and Latin American, European, African and U.S. history. Correspondents include George Catlin, William H. Seward, Henry M. Stanley, and many other prominent individuals of the period. Register available.

Primarily, this is the family correspondence of Henry (1804-1880), a lawyer, Whig orator, and cotton planter of Clarksville, and his wife and children. Most correspondence was written during 1840-60, by family members traveling or visiting in Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, and New York. Also included are letters from other relatives, friends, overseers, and political acquaintances; recipes, poems, a few bills and maps; and other miscellaneous items. This collection does not include Henry's official correspondence as a Confederate Senator. Register available.

Mf. 136  -- Willard Warner Papers, 1767-1885. 300 items. 4 vols. TSLA. 2 reels. 35 mm. Microfilm Only Collection.
These are the papers of Willard Warner (1826-1906), a California “Forty-niner;” Major General, 76th Ohio Infantry, and later, Colonel in the 180th Ohio Infantry, U.S. Army, during the Civil War; member of the Ohio, Alabama, and Tennessee state legislatures; U.S. Senator from Alabama; cotton planter; and resident of Chattanooga. Collection consists primarily of Warner's personal and political correspondence; also included are newspaper clippings, autographs, photographs, accounts, and other memorabilia tracing Warner's life. Warner's correspondence with General William T. Sherman and John Sherman is significant. Warner fought at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Vicksburg, Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Ringgold, and Atlanta. Register available.

The papers of Albert Gleaves (1858-1937), a native of Nashville; admiral, U.S. Navy; and commander of U.S. convoy operations in the Atlantic during World War I, includes Gleaves' correspondence while he was a student at the U.S. Naval Academy, 1873-77, and while on subsequent tours of duty in Europe and Asia; detailed memoirs of his extensive world travels; and some genealogical data on the Cohen, Eastman, Gleaves, Rowan (Roan), Steward (Stuart), Tannehill, and Van Metre families.

Mf. 138  -- Joseph Benjamin Palmer Autograph Album, 1862. 1 vol. TSLA. 1 reel. 35 mm. Microfilm Only Collection.
This is the album of Col. Palmer (1825-1890) of Rutherford County, 18th Tennessee Infantry, Confederate States of America. Palmer kept this album while he was a prisoner at Fort Warren in Boston Harbor, Massachusetts, following his capture at Fort Donelson in 1862. The album contains the names of many men who were also captured at Fort Donelson.

These are three (indexed) cemetery deed books which contain information on transfers, lot location, sellers and purchases, dates of sales, and prices of lots; and three volumes of interments, 1846-81, in rough alphabetical order listing name, age, sex, race, residence, cause of death, and other remarks. Papers of A. R. Hogue (b. 1873), a native and resident of Fentress County; and editor, publisher, and owner of two Jamestown newspapers. Collection includes his autobiography and the manuscript of “Your Family and Mine;” also included are census records, land grants, lists of Fentress County soldiers who served in various wars, genealogical data, and other historical materials relating to Fentress County.

This is a memory book with infrequent journal entries by a young woman attending St. Mary's School (possibly located in Shelby County). Miss Rogan records the names of school friends, poems, and her ideas about life.

These are accounts by an unnamed doctor who practiced near Beersheba Springs in Grundy County. Entries contain names of patients, information about diseases treated, medicines used, fees charged, and payments received.

The autobiographical sketch of C. R. Morehead (b. 1800), a merchant and businessman who lived in Virginia, Kentucky, Missouri, Massachusetts, and Kansas, includes genealogical data on the Hove, Morehead, and Ransdell families.

These are listings of lots, houses, farms, and plantations for rent, sale, and exchange in Nashville and other parts of Davidson County, and numerous other counties in Tennessee, Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Texas. The records were probably for the real estate firm of Anderson, Johnson, and Smith of Nashville.

The Dudley Gale Papers includes clippings, correspondence, diary, account book, and genealogical data relating to the Polk, Gale, and kindred families. A memoir, 1895, by Katherine Polk Gale, daughter of Gen. Leonidas Polk, Confederate States of America, details the hardships brought about by the Civil War.

The papers of P. M. Fink, collector, consist of items of the Civil War period including commissary and ordnance returns; company orders, 4th Tennessee Infantry, U.S. Army, 1864-65; loyalty bonds, 1865, of citizens of Johnson County; muster rolls, 1867, of Co. C, Tennessee State Guard; information regarding formation of the 60th Mounted Tennessee Infantry, 1862; and correspondence 1862-63, relating to Confederate supplies in East Tennessee.

The papers of the Douglass family, volumes 1 and 2, are comprised of the lecture notes of A. W. Douglass taken while he was a student at the University of Nashville, 1841-42. Subjects covered include philosophy history, religion, and chemistry. Volume 3 consists of a journal kept by C. B. Douglass while a member of Co. C, 9th Texas Infantry, Confederate States of America, while stationed in and around Meridian, Mississippi, and Demopolis, Alabama. Douglass describes his daily activities and some of the hardships he endured as a soldier.

This is the diary of Samuel Henderson, medical doctor and farmer who resided in Williamson County, near the town of Franklin. Henderson (b. 1804) records his daily activities as a doctor, makes observations on crops and the weather; and comments on politics, religion, and the schooling of his children; also included is some genealogical data on the Henderson family. Entries made during the Civil War reveal information about the home front and nearby battles.

These are the papers of Calvin Jones (1775-1846), physician, military officer, newspaper editor, and planter of Raleigh, North Carolina, and later Hardeman County, Tennessee. The collection consists of correspondence, business records, military papers, legal documents, speech drafts, accounts, and other items relating to Calvin Jones and his family. The bulk of the correspondence consists of the incoming correspondence of Calvin Jones, 1799-1846; also included are letters, 1820 and 1823 from Jones to his wife Temperance while Jones was in Tennessee looking for lands; letters from Calvin Jones' stepson Thomas C. Jones to his mother Temperance Jones, written while he was in Tennessee; and correspondence of other family members. The correspondence of Thomas C. Jones also includes descriptions of Nashville in 1823 and such persons as Felix Grundy, William Carroll, and James K. Polk. Also included is some personal and business correspondence of Calvin Jones' son Paul Tudor Jones.

Calvin Jones was the owner of a 30,000 acre cotton plantation in Hardeman County and the hundreds of slaves it took to work it. He and his heirs were careful record-keepers, and these and the other collections of his records are some of the best plantation records that Tennessee has to offer. These are papers of Horace Harmon Lurton (1844-1914), a native of Newport, Kentucky; Confederate army veteran; lawyer; professor and dean at Vanderbilt University School of Law, Nashville; and member of the Tennessee and U.S. Supreme Courts. The collection consists primarily of Lurton's correspondence including seventeen Civil War letters, some of which were written from Fort Donelson and later Johnson's Island prison, where Lurton was imprisoned until 1865. Also included are accounts, addresses, reports, and other items, 1860-1914. Correspondents include Lord Alverstone, John M. Harlan, Charles E. Hughes, Theodore Roosevelt, William H. Taft, and other prominent individuals of the period.

These are the diaries of Francis McMillan Carmack (1832-1861), a teacher and preacher for the Church of Christ who taught at Franklin College near Nashville; the Bledsoe Female Academy in Sumner County; Euclid Hill Academy in Mississippi; and a school in Selma, Alabama. Included are notes on Carmack's daily activities; comments on Jefferson Davis, Henry Stuart Foote, and other public figures; and genealogical data on the Carmack, McMillan, and related families.

This collection consists of the existing records of the University of Nashville. These records trace the history of the university from its beginning as the Davidson Academy, chartered by the North Carolina legislature in 1785, through successive changes of name, and the establishment of additional departments in fields such as medicine and education. The collection includes historical memoranda, 1785-1885; lists of degrees conferred, 1813-50; lists of graduates, trustees, and faculty with dates of appointment; minutes of meetings of the Board of Trustees, 1825-1914; account books with some gaps, 1818-70, 1880-1911; class rolls and record books with some gaps, 1851-56, 1890-1911; records of the Western Military institute 1847-1963; records of Montgomery Bell Academy, 1922-50; and lectures, speeches, and letters of Dr. Phillip Lindsley, president of the university, 1821-51. The diary of Pvt. W. E. Sloan (b. 1841) of Polk County, Co. C, 3rd Tennessee Volunteer Infantry, and Co. D, 5th Tennessee Cavalry, Confederate States of America, gives a detailed account of his daily activities and those of his unit while on campaigns in Virginia, Maryland, and East Tennessee.

Papers of John Reid (1784-1816), a native of Virginia; military aide and secretary to Andrew Jackson; and Williamson County lawyer, consists primarily of Reid's legal papers relating to the 1813 trial of David Magness for the murder of Patton Anderson. The trial was held in the Williamson County courthouse.

This book of occurrences was maintained by an unnamed Indian agent or army officer in the Cherokee and Choctaw country (probably in what is now East Tennessee ). Included are notes on Indian customs and their meanings, local events relating to whites and Indians, government orders, accounts, and an “elucidation” of the 1806 U.S. treaty with the Cherokee Nation.

These are the memoirs of “Uncle Jimmie Smith” (1789-1875), who lived in Richmond County, North Carolina, Middle and West Tennessee, and south Texas. Smith records his experiences as a teacher in Maury County, noting that one pupil was James K. Polk. Also noted are his experiences in Texas just prior to the Mexican War, 1846-48; his membership in the Presbyterian Church; and genealogical data on the Morehead, Murphee, Sandford, Turner, and related families.

These are records of a Jefferson County church which was in two locations and had two names. The church was called Westminster Presbyterian at Leadvale, and St. Paul 's Presbyterian at Flat Creek.

These are records of George Gray (1777-1859), a surveyor who probably lived in Franklin County. Volume 1 consists primarily of genealogical data on the Gray family and medicinal recipes for the treatment of various diseases such as consumption and "collick." Volume 2 consists of Gray's records of surveys completed, persons for whom they were done and grant numbers.

These are assorted financial records of Andrew Jackson (1767-1845), congressman, War of 1812 officer, Florida Territory Governor, and U.S. President. Volume 1 is a 1795 account book of a general merchandise store, located in Nashville and belonging to Jackson and John Donelson. Volume 2 consists of an account book, 1802-04, for a general merchandise store, entitled Jackson and Co., containing alphabetical listing of accounts. Volume 3 is an account book, 1803-04, for Jackson 's general merchandise store in Lebanon. Volume 4 consists of an inventory of furniture delivered to the Hermitage; seed expenses at Jackson 's Clover Bottom farm; an 1817 account book; records of names, ages, and births of slaves at the Hermitage, 1829-32; and a cash account book for Andrew Jackson Donelson, 1829. These are the papers of Robertson Topp (1807-1876), prominent Memphis lawyer, merchant, businessman, and member of the Tennessee General Assembly, 1836. The collection includes extensive family and business correspondence; biographical and genealogical data; diaries and memoirs; land records; and estate papers. Also included are business and legal papers dealing with the South Memphis Land Company, railroads, and the Memphis Gayoso House; data concerning trade with the Federal troops during the Civil War; and materials dealing with attempts to secure refunds from the Civil War cotton tax. Correspondents include David Farragut, Ulysses S. Grant, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, and other prominent individuals of the period.

The collection also includes a journal 1805-07, of William L. Brown of Kentucky, an uncle of Mrs. Topp and a member of the Tennessee Supreme Court, 1822-24. The journal includes records of Brown's daily activities as a student and manager of some of the family property near Lexington, Kentucky; genealogical data on the Brown, Little, Stuart, Thomas, Topp, and Vance families; and some information on Clarksville in the 1800s. These are records of Washington College, a Presbyterian school founded by Samuel Doak in 1780. The collection includes minutes of the Board of Trustees, that cover the period 1795-1963 (with the exception of gaps from 1863-66 and 1892-1908); lists of graduates; historical sketches; records of property interests; contracts for building construction; wills and bequests; reports of committees; financial reports; minutes of the stockholders meeting of the Cumberland Coal Company, 1879; and students' grade records, 1780-1909.

This is the diary of Bradley Kimbrough, Baptist minister who preached in Middle Tennessee and played an important role in the Baptist controversy concerning missionary work. Kimbrough (b. 1800) records his daily activities, including a visit with Andrew Jackson at the Hermitage. Also included is some genealogical data on the Kimbrough family.

In the diary of this young Chattanooga woman, the daughter of David M. Key (1824-1900), U.S. Senator and Postmaster General, Miss Key records her daily activities and observations, two trips to Europe in 1908 and 1909, her marriage to Samuel R. Read, and trips to New York, Bermuda, and Yellowstone Park, 1910-12.

This collection contains extensive correspondence dealing with the anti-slavery movement written by private citizens and workers for the American Missionary Association, Union Missionary Society, and similar agencies. Letters after the war deal with issues such as the freedmen’s schools and the activities of the London Freedmen’s Aid Society. Correspondents include many leaders of the movement such as Francis L. Cardozo, Frederick Douglass, John Rapier, H. R. Revels, Louis Tappan, and Jonathan Wright. These papers are in the American Missionary Association archives at Fisk University.

This doctoral dissertation, University of Minnesota, 1961, deals with the life and career of Goodrich (1807-1887), a native of New York; member of the Tennessee General Assembly from Stewart County, 1847-49; territorial judge of Minnesota, 1849-51; Secretary of the U.S. Legation to Belgium, 1861-68; Unionist and anti-abolitionist.

These are public and private papers of Andrew Johnson (1808-1875), seventeenth President of the U.S. 1865-69. The collection consists not only of Johnson’s presidential papers in the Library of Congress but of correspondence, messages and speeches, business records and records of Johnson's activities as military governor of Tennessee.
