Mf. 299  -- William Driver Logbook and Journal, 1831, ca. 1865-1873. 2 vols. TSLA. 1 reel. 35 mm.
This is the log kept by Driver (1803-1866), captain of the Charles Doggett on a voyage from Salem, Massachusetts, to Tahiti and Pitcairn Island. Captain Driver’s 1831 voyage was made in order to return the descendants of the H.M.S. Bounty survivors to Tahiti from their erstwhile home on Pitcairn Island. The logbook is illustrated with drawings of marine life and represents a significant document in Anglo-American nautical history.

Driver's journal contains a diatribe against Andrew Johnson and post-Civil War politics, and the memoirs of his earlier journey. Driver, a native of Massachusetts, a sea captain and later resident of Nashville, is most famous for his nicknaming of the American flag "Old Glory." Register available.
