The papers are centered on William Mark Eames (1827-1884), Civil War surgeon of Ashtabula, OH. The bulk of the collection consists of family correspondence written by Eames while stationed in Nashville and Murfreesboro at Union army hospitals. Included are letters describing Nashville during the Civil War, life in a Murfreesboro army hospital, the 1862 raid by General Nathan Bedford Forrest on Murfreesboro, and experiences with General John Hunt Morgan’s guerrillas. There are also letters and pencil drawings from Fort Delaware, Maryland, 1864. The register includes a name index to correspondence and descriptions of letters.

These are the papers of Paul Jay Adams (1901-1985) of Crab Orchard, near Crossville. Adams was a well-known naturalist and operated a thriving floral and landscape business. He was appointed to the Great Smoky Mountains Conservation Association at the time when the Smokies were being considered as a park site in 1926. The collection is comprised of correspondence, notes, clippings and maps showing the topography of mountain areas in North Carolina and Tennessee. The register includes a container list.

The papers of collector Mary Nichols Britt is composed primarily of correspondence and early documents relating to the Nichols, McCown, McPhail, and Carter families, primarily of Williamson County. These papers trace the families back to the earliest settlements in Middle Tennessee and contain a number of early land grants, plat maps (one of which is signed by John Donelson), and slave deeds. The collection also contains some important antebellum and Civil War ambrotypes and letters, particularly of George S. Nichols, who married the niece of Todd Carter of the Carter House in Franklin. In addition, there are some brief diary notes, about 500 photographs, a number of small account books, and several scrapbooks. The register includes a container list and Nichols-Britt genealogical charts.

These are the papers and memoirs of Eugene Hermann Plumacher, U.S. consul to Venezuela, 1877-90. Plumacher was one of the founders of the Swiss colony at Gruetli in Grundy County and worked much of his life to encourage European immigration to the south. Toward that end, he sought a consular post and eventually gained an appointment as a diplomat in the American consulate at Maracaibo, Venezuela. Most of the collection consists of memoirs of his years in Venezuela and letters back to Nashville to his friend Morton B. Howell. He witnessed the revolution of 1879 in Venezuela and relates many episodes and incidents which occurred during these perilous times. The register includes a container list and subject index.

A large part of the collection was assembled in the course of preparing Weakley’s book, The Southern Virginia Weakley Families and their Descendants. The collection includes aerial maps used in connection with Weakley’s land research; his thesis concerning Cumberland River floods; and historical information about early traffic on the river. There are also notes and photographs concerning the early history of Nashville. The bulk of the collection consists of genealogical data on the Polk family of North Carolina and Tennessee, as well as collateral lines such as Alexander, Bills, Branch, Burch, Campbell, Craig, Donelson, Erwin, Hobson, Houston, Howard, Hunter, Jones, Shelby and others.

There are also letters from Joseph G. Branch to his wife Mary Jones Polk Branch concerning runaway slaves, plantation overseers, the threat of jayhawkers during the Civil War, and the economic desolation of the South. The letters from Mrs. Branch concern the effect of the war on the family and their neighbors.

The papers concerning Dr. Humphrey Howell Bate (1844-1911), Sumner County, Tennessee, physician and his sister, Countess Eugenia Patience (Bate) Bertinatti (1826-1906), wife of Count Guiseppi Bertinatti (died 1881), an Italian envoy to the U.S., contains substantial family correspondence, court records, and genealogical data.

There are also a few letters by William Brimage Bate (l826-l905), a cousin of Eugenia, who was a General in the Civil War, a Governor of Tennessee (l883-l887) and United States Senator (l887-l905). Among the Civil War items is a letter of condolence to Mrs. Anna F. Bate on the death of her son Aaron Spivey Bate (l845-l863); a fragmented Civil War diary of Aaron's for l863; passes for Humphrey and Aaron; and a copy of a loyalty oath signed by Humphrey on April 6, l865. The slavery item is a bill of sale for 1809 and 1834.

The papers relate to the Allen family of Rhea County, primarily Valentine C. Allen (1842-1915) and his son, William B. Allen. The former was circuit court chancellor and the latter its clerk. The papers concentrate on legal proceedings and consist primarily of correspondence about cases before the court. Included is correspondence dated 1863 of Valentine Allen who was later active in the Confederate Veteran’s activities.

These are the papers of Mildred Bowen Prewett Ingram (1904-1980), novelist, and her husband, Daniel Taylor Ingram (1898-1969), commandant and superintendent of the Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon. The collection includes accounts, church records, clippings, correspondence, diaries and memoirs, land and legal records, obituaries and photographs.

The Civil War memoir of John Gold, Mrs. Ingram's grandfather, discusses his army service before his internment as a prisoner-of-war on Johnson Island. Among the more interesting clippings are articles on Confederate veteran reunions.

Records of Castle Heights include catalogs and yearbooks, programs, lists of faculty and staff, and issues of the campus newspaper, the Cavalier. Mildred Ingram’s original manuscripts, publicity and reviews, and correspondence with publishers are also included. These are selected plantation records, edited by Kenneth M. Stampp, from the Southern Historical Collection at UNC Chapel Hill, illuminating nearly every aspect of plantation life (mostly from larger plantations) and serving as a valuable tool for studying slavery. TSLA holds the Tennessee portion of the collection containing records of notable planters such as Calvin Jones (Hardeman County), the Harding and Jackson families (Davidson County), the Polk, Ewell and Brown families (Maury County), and John Houston Bills (Hardeman County), among others. Lipscomb as he traveled from the Holston settlements to Nashville in the summer of 1784; and a notebook of Gerard Troost (1776-1850), professor of chemistry, geology and mineralogy at the University of Nashville and the first State Geologist.

The papers of Dr. Chesley Williams (1856-1927),Eagleville (Rutherford County) physician and businessman, consists of several types of account books, invoices, office files, toll gate receipts, and toll gate records. Dr. Williams owned and operated a general store, and involved himself in the affairs of the local school district, the Eagleville and Salem Turnpike, and the Eagleville, Unionville, and Shelbyville Turnpike. Established in Washington in 1865, the company served as a banking institution for the benefit of freed slaves. Indexes are arranged alphabetically and include the depositors’ names and account numbers. The register contains a detailed history of the company.

The papers of William H. Tippitt consist of an extensive study of the steamboat industry in the south, centering on the Anchor Line and Lee Line (1832-1930). The study includes detailed information on the steamboats, numerous photographs, and background information on the owners and captains, along with menus and advertisements.

Accounts, receipts, bills, notes, surveys, deeds, military records, and correspondence related to Evan Shelby (1719-1794).  Shelby was a prominent farmer, merchant, soldier, and political figure.  He was elected governor of the State of Franklin to succeed John Sevier, but he turned down the position.  The collection includes a list of Capt. Evan Shelby’s Company taken on June 11, 1772.  Some notable names appearing on the list are: Isaac Bledsoe, Samuel Henley, William Williams, John Leviston, Francis Queen, John Dickson, Robert Sevier, Woolman Stedman, James Catron, James Shelby, and John Carmack.  Also included in the materials is a roll of men who served on the Washington County frontier under the command of Col. Albert Houston Roberts (1868-1946), educator, lawyer and Governor of Tennessee 1919-21, was well known for his pivotal role in the passage of the suffrage amendment for women in 1920. The bulk of the collection is largely concentrated in the years 1921-35, and the main body is made up of files on cases handled by Roberts’ law firm. Among the most important cases are the Cumberland Telephone and Telegraph Rate case and the Birier Hill case involving a large tract of land in Fentress County. The collection also includes account books, Civil War claims, correspondence, estate and land records, school records, speeches, and several miscellaneous items.
